With one more week remaining in the regular season, Sioux Falls (S.D.) stays as the No. 1 team in the ninth regular season NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 Poll. For the 12th straight poll, Sioux Falls stands alone on top of the NAIA football world and now has 41 top billings since 2000. The Cougars recorded 18 of the possible 19 first-place votes and a total of 444 points. Sioux Falls, who is riding a nation-best 24-game winning streak, collides with undefeated No. 4 Morningside (Iowa) for the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday from Sioux City, Iowa.
The final regular season Top 25 Poll will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 15 by 1 p.m. CST on www.NAIA.org. For the 12th straight poll, No. 2 Carroll (Mont.) checks in at the runner-up position. The Fighting Saints posted 426 total points and grabbed the remaining first-place vote. Carroll wrapped up its 10th straight Frontier Conference Championship recently and finished the regular season undefeated at 11-0 after a 48-43 shoot-out win over then-No. 22 Eastern Oregon on Nov. 7.
No. 3 Lindenwood (Mo.) remains in the third slot this week after winning its 18th straight conference game. After a 53-21 victory against Graceland (Iowa), Lindenwood secured at least a share of its third Heart of America Athletic Conference title. The Lions hold the No. 3 ranking for the 12th straight week. Lindenwood earned 411 total points in the poll and will try to remain undefeated next Saturday as it faces William Jewell (Mo.).
No. 4 Morningside corralled 393 total points this week. The Mustangs look to knock off No. 1 Sioux Falls this weekend, a team that has won three straight conference crowns and seven of the last eight titles. Standing 9-0 this year, Morningside's strength is the balance of its offense (scoring nearly 53 points) and defense (holding opponents to 11 points). Morningside has held seven of nine opponents to 20 points or fewer. Conversely, Sioux Falls has reached at least 28 points in all 10 wins and has topped 50 points on five occasions.
A new team to the top five, No. 5 St. Xavier (Ill.) jumped up one slot thanks to a 36-24 win at then-No. 8 St. Francis (Ind.). The win snapped St. Francis' 56-game home winning streak and assured St. Xavier of its first conference title in school history. The Cougars sport their highest ranking this year and is tied with Carroll (Mont.) for the most wins (11) in the nation.
Two teams fell out of the Top 25 from last week, No. 24 Georgetown (Ky.) and No. 25 St. Ambrose (Iowa).
No. 25 Taylor (Ind.) is recognized in the poll for the first time since Sept. 16, 2000 (No. 15). At 6-3 overall, the Trojans are guaranteed of their first winning season since 1999. No. 24 Baker (Kan.) hops back in for the first time since the Preseason Top 25. Since losing three of its first five games, Baker has won four straight.
NOTES: The 24-game winning streak is tied for college football's longest in any division (NAIA and NCAA) -- Mount Union (Ohio), an NCAA Division III member, also holds 24 straight wins... No. 11 Saint Francis (Ind.) drops out of the top 10 for the first time since Sept. 23, 2003... Talk about consistency, the top three teams have been ranked the same each week in all 11 polls... No. 2 Carroll (Mont.) has been either No. 1 or No. 2 for the last 31 straight rankings... Sioux Falls (S.D.) has now been ranked No. 1 a total of 41 times since the 2000 season including 24 mentions since 2007... The No. 1 Sioux Falls defense has been getting the job done as no opposing player has rushed for 100 yards or more since the 2007 National Championship - a span of 24 games... Six teams in the country boast undefeated records with Carroll (Mont.) and St. Xavier (Ill.) holding the most wins (11)... The last time a team other than Carroll (Mont.) and Sioux Falls (S.D.) was ranked at No. 1 was Saint Francis (Ind.) on Nov. 12, 2006 - a streak of 39 polls... Carroll has now been ranked in the Top 5 in the last 62 straight polls dating back to November, 2004... St. Francis boasts the longest consecutive stretch of being named in the Coaches' Top 25 Poll - now standing at 126 straight mentions - the last time St. Francis was not mentioned in the Top 25 was Oct. 19, 1999... After St. Francis, Carroll is the next team in line with 113 straight Top 25 rankings while Sioux Falls stands at 112 straight mentions... Since 2000, Carroll has been ranked No. 1 53 times, the highest amount of any program during that time span; Sioux Falls is second with 41 mentions at No. 1 followed by Georgetown (Ky.) with 14, Northwestern Oklahoma State with 11 and St. Francis with three... Since 2000, there are seven teams that have been ranked at least one time each season - Carroll (Mont.), MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.), St. Ambrose (Iowa), St. Francis (Ind.), St. Xavier (Ill.), Sioux Falls (S.D.)... There are 77 schools that have been ranked at least once in the Top 25 since 2000, of that group of schools, six no longer sponsor NAIA football.
