Navarro (Texas) and Fort Scott (Kansas) are again No. 1 and No. 2 in the latest edition of the NJCAA / JC Football.com Rankings. Both teams won their respective conference semifinal contests this past weekend to advance in the postseason. Navarro received 139 total poll points this week and six of seven first place votes while Fort Scott tallied 134 poll points and one first place vote.
Blinn (Texas), Snow (Utah), Grand Rapids (Mich.), East Mississippi, Arizona Western, Butler (Kan.), Mississippi Gulf Coast and Central Lakes (Minn.) round out this week’s Top 10.
Navarro (10-0) got past Kilgore (Texas) 24-10 in the semifinals of the Southwest JC Football Conference. The Bulldogs jumped out to a big lead and then held on as they committed five turnovers in the contest. In the other semifinal game, No. 3 Blinn (Texas) defeated then No. 14 Tyler (Texas) 21-15, which puts Navarro and Blinn together again for the SWJCFC Championship. The Bulldogs and Buccaneers will meet Sunday for the fourth time in less than a year, and for the second consecutive year in the conference title game. Two weeks ago Navarro defeated Blinn 23-20 to take the leagues’ regular season championship. Last year, Blinn defeated a 10-0 Navarro squad that was ranked No. 1 by a score of 24-21.
The second edition of Navarro vs. Blinn in three weeks will again take place on Sunday, Nov. 15 in Corsicana, Texas. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. (Central).
Fort Scott (10-0) had no problems in its Region 6 semifinal contest as the Greyhounds ran past then No. 17 Hutchinson (Kan.) 42-17 on Sunday (Nov. 8). Fort Scott’s Jasmin Hopkins ran away with the game as he rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown in the first half and then added 83 yards and two more scores in the second half. In the other Region 6 semifinal, No. 7 Butler (Kan.) escaped with a 21-14 win over then No. 16 Coffeyville (Kan.) to advance to the league’s title game for the fourth consecutive season. Butler scored with 2:39 left in the game to tie the score at 14-14 and then recovered the ensuing muffed kick-off return by Coffeyville. Four plays later Butler running back Delando Henderson plowed into the endzone for the game-winning touchdown.
The Greyhounds will now host the Grizzlies for the Region 6 Championship on Sunday, Nov. 15 with the kickoff slated for 1:30 p.m. Two weeks ago Fort Scott defeated Butler 14-10, which gave the Greyhounds their first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference title in 35 years.
The Snow Badgers (9-1) were off last week but have a big game on their schedule Saturday when they travel to No. 7 Arizona Western (8-1). A win by Snow will give the Badgers their fourth straight Western States Football League title. A victory by AWC will give the Matadors their first conference championship since 2000. The Matadors defeated the Badgers earlier this year (Sept. 5) in Ephraim, Utah, 35-17 in a non-WSFL contest. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (Mountain) kickoff.
Grand Rapids (10-0) won the Midwest Football Conference – East Division Championship with their 41-27 win over Joliet (Ill.) last Saturday. GRCC's Jason Hannett had a team-leading 118 yards rushing on 11 attempts and scored on a 33-yard run. It is the first East Division title for the Raiders since 2006. The Raiders will likely be heading to a bowl game when those matchups are announced on Nov. 17. GRCC is trying to become the first Raider football team since 1968 to finish the season undefeated.
East Mississippi (10-1) won its first-ever Mississippi Assn. of Community & Junior Colleges (MACJC) Championship with a wild 75-71 victory over two-time defending MACJC Champion Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday. The game featured over 1,219 yards of combined total offense and 146 points. Defense was hard to find in this game as the two squads matched touchdown drives from the second quarter till the end of the game. East Mississippi trailed 71-68 with 2:48 remaining in the final frame until NJCAA preseason All-American and two-time MACJC Offensive Player of the Year Randall Mackey tossed his seventh touchdown of the game – a 32-yard strike to Lance Lewis – with 1:38 remaining to lift the Lions to a 75-71 win.
Mackey finished the contest 31-of-42 for 477 passing yards and seven touchdowns along with 125 rushing yards on 18 carries. Lewis posted his fifth-straight 100-yard receiving game with nine catches for 134 yards and four touchdowns. Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Vick Ballard had 186 rushing yards on 33 carries, including four touchdowns, while quarterback Greg Jenkins completed 14-of-25 passes for 331 yards and five touchdowns. Kelvin Bolden was Jenkins' primary target for the day with eight receptions for 260 yards and three scores.
East Mississippi and Mississippi Gulf Coast, now ranked ninth, will both likely be in the postseason bowl picture, but will have to wait untill the Nov. 17th NJCAA bowl announcement date to learn their fate.
Central Lakes (Minn.) avenged a 27-6 loss earlier this season to Rochester by defeated the Yellow Jackets 20-14 in overtime to win the Minnesota College Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday (Nov. 8). The Raiders blocked two field goals in the contest, one late in the fourth quarter and one in overtime, which helped CLC win its first ever MCAC Championship. The victory also snapped Rochester’s 15-game winning streak, which was the longest active winning streak in the country. Central Lakes will be looking for its first bowl berth since 1988 and second in school history when selections are announced on Nov. 17th.
NOTES: With Rochester’s loss to Central Lakes on Sunday there are just three undefeated teams in this week’s poll (Navarro, Fort Scott and Grand Rapids) and all three are 10-0…The longest active winning streak in the NJCAA ended at 15 games with Rochester’s loss to Central Lakes…Fort Scott now owns the longest active NJCAA winning streak with 11 consecutive victories dating back to last season…Just one team dropped out of the Top 20 this week – Georgia Military (No. 19)…Blinn, Navarro and Butler have all appeared together in the Top 10 in 21 out of the last 22 rankings.
