The Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association is made up of 18-member head coaches and the chairman of the Assistant Coaches Committee, who serves as an ex officio member. The executive director of the AFCA serves as the secretary-treasurer. The 18-member head coaches are broken down as follows: One FBS head coach from eight of the nine districts (there are no FBS schools in District 1); two head coaches from each of the AFCA's other divisions (FCS, Division II and Division III) and one head coach from the NAIA. The Board many name an at-large member at its discretion.

Board Officers: The four longest-standing members of the Board of Trustees serve as president, first vice president, second vice president and third vice president in order of seniority. After the president completes his one year term, he is replaced by the first vice president.

Term of Appointment: Once appointed to the Board of Trustees, a coach remains on the Board until he:

1. Serves out his term as president to complete his Board of Trustees tenure.

2. Leaves the coaching profession.

3. Resigns his appointment.

4. Is removed by the Board.

Appointment Process: At least one new trustee is named each year to replace the outgoing president. Additional appointments are made to replace any trustees who may have left the Board.

The AFCA office forwards recommendations from coaches in the district or division that has a Board position open to the Nominating Committee. These recommendations are then reviewed by the committee and a list of finalists is given to the Board for selection. The new trustee(s), along with the sitting members of the Board, are presented to the membership for an approval by voice vote at the AFCA Awards Luncheon during the convention. The new Board of Trustees officially takes office with the trustees' meeting on the last day of the convention.

In addition to 2010 AFCA President Larry Kehres, the AFCA's current board of trustees is comprised of the following members:
