Three Top 10 Teams Lose
After several weeks of very little movement in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, three Top 10 teams lost this past weekend, causing a big shift in the rankings. The weekend started with then-No. 1 Valdosta State (Ga.) losing to new No. 8 West Alabama, 49-30, on Thursday night. Then West Texas A&M, who was ranked No. 4, and then-No. 7 Indiana (Pa.), both lost on Saturday, causing a bigger shakeup of the rankings.
Minnesota State-Mankato earns its first-ever No. 1 ranking in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Poll, earning 26 first-place votes. They are followed by No. 2 Northwest Missouri State, who got four first-place votes, No. 3 Colorado State-Pueblo and No. 4 Missouri Western State, who each earned a first-place nod. Henderson State (Ark.) rounds out the top five.
Then-No. 19 Chadron State (Neb.) and then-No. 24 Grand Valley State (Mich.) both lost and fell out of the Top 25, making room for No. 23 Newberry (S.C.) and No. 25 St. Cloud State (Minn.) to enter the poll. This is Newberry’s first ranking since September 24, 2012, when they were ranked No. 24, while St. Cloud State re-enters after a one-week layoff.
