Division II star unveiled as honor recipient during The Home Depot College Football Awards
NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Dec. 12, 2013 – Seated among the best of the best in college football, nationally recognized players all in contention for the sport’s top performance awards, it was Henderson State University quarterback Kevin Rodgers who was honored by Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) for his work in the community and his commitment to serving others during The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12.
Rodgers, a junior for the Division II Reddies, was voted by college football fans as captain of the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football. Of 150 nominees, Rodgers was announced to the team in September along with 21 other players for his charitable achievements at Henderson State, and since received the most fan votes on ESPN.com to earn team captaincy.
“Each year, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® recognizes an outstanding group of players that, through their dedication to contributing to the greater good of their communities, help to protect the integrity of college football,” said Cynthia Whitfield, field senior vice president of Allstate’s Southern region and a member of the 2013 voting panel. “Kevin and his deeply rooted commitment to serving others embody everything that the Good Works Team stands for, and Allstate together with the AFCA is proud to have him as our 2013 team captain.”
An All-American player from Rockwall, Texas, Rodgers has been involved with numerous charitable efforts during his time at Henderson State, including traveling to Panama City, Fla., in support of the Baptist Collegiate Ministries “Beach Reach” mission trip. Rodgers also assists in building playgrounds at local schools and community centers, and helped bring joy to a terminally ill child during the holiday season when he decorated the child’s home with Christmas lights.
Rodgers and his fellow Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members have been invited to New Orleans to participate in a special youth football clinic prior to the 2014 Allstate® Sugar Bowl®. The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® will also be honored at halftime of the Allstate® Sugar Bowl®, which will be televised nationally on ESPN on Jan. 2, 2014.
