Defensive Philosophy
Coach James’ defensive philosophy centers on doing your job and assignment, with the primary goal of getting the ball back to the offense and keeping points off the board. It’s important to establish clear expectations for the defense and pursue perfection, even though it’s challenging to achieve.
Standards:
While football is the focus, Coach James stresses that success extends beyond the field. Players should approach everything in life with the same intensity, whether it’s football-related or not. The key standards include:
- Going to class
- 100% effort everywhere
- Following the golden rule
- Be early for all engagements
- Understanding we’re one heartbeat
- Win the day
Winning Situational Football:
Coach James emphasizes that most games are won through situational football. Key areas include:
- 3rd Down: Knowing your opponent’s key players, mixing up coverages based on down and distance, and mastering tendencies.
- Red Zone: Specializing in red zone coverages, understanding the field dynamics, and knowing where opponents want to attack.
- 2-Minute: Recognizing the situation, avoiding penalties, tackling opponents inbounds, and maintaining composure under pressure.
- 4-Minute: Staying gap-sound, avoiding penalties, getting the ball back to the offense with enough time, and tackling opponents quickly.
