Rod Ojong is currently the Cornerbacks Coach at Indiana University, joining Curt Cignetti’s staff for the 2024 season. During his first year, he played a key role in helping the Hoosiers achieve an 11-2 record and earn a spot in the CFP. Before arriving at Indiana, Ojong held coaching positions at several programs, including Charlotte, Buffalo, Georgia, Furman, Austin Peay, North Carolina, Memphis, West Georgia, Lindsey Wilson College, and Monmouth College. Ojong played Linebacker at Monmouth during his collegiate career.
Coach Ojong demonstrates several drills focused on the Release Zone within Press Man Progression. Some of the drills featured include Foot Fire, Chute Ladder, and Push to Reach. He also provides detailed coaching on hand placement, emphasizing the techniques he teaches his players to effectively execute.
Press Man Progression
Stance
- Shoulders over your toes
- BKA (Bend at the knees & ankles)
- Squeezed knees (Knocked knees)
- Toes gripping the ground
- Weight on the inside portion of your feet
- Tension in thumbs, index & middle finger
Press Progression
- Release Zone
- 0-5 yards
The release zone is your combat zone, focusing your eyes on the logo and maintaining technique. Ojong is a strong believer that you win with your feet, your hands are just a bonus.
- Foot Fire
- Gets feet activated – pre-practice drill
- Chute Ladder
- Starting in a press stance, shoulder over toes, bent knees and ankles
- Activating leverage foot
- Push to Reach
- Push + Reach = Preach
- Lateral step that is used to widen the WRs release – primary weapon in the B world of press
Hand Placement
- Where to Strike:
- Near breast plate
- Near shoulder
- How to Strike:
- Thumbs up, Elbows in (Hit w/ the Heart of your Hand)
- Quick, Strong Jab Bring It Back
