Coby Gipson is the Head Coach at Howard Payne University, beginning his second tenure with the program in 2025. In addition to HPU, Gipson held coaching positions at Lamar, East Texas Baptist, Bishop T.K. Gorman Catholic School (TX), and Grace Community High School (TX).
Wide Receiver Practice Drills:
In this video, Coach Gipson shares insights into his drill work, coaching philosophies, and key principles that guide his wide receiver group. He also outlines five critical categories he focuses on during practice and highlights game clips. Every practice begins with a Ball Security Circuit, a crucial aspect of wide receiver play.

- Stance/Start/Breaks
- Releases
- Blocking
- Top of the Route
- Contested Catch
4 Coaching Points:
- Reduce: Focus on speed releases and eliminating the target, minimizing the surface area exposed to the defender.
- Red Line: Emphasize getting vertical and maintaining a straight line.
- Be Open Late: Encourage receivers to avoid rushing to get open and instead work on getting open at the right moment.
- Late High Hands: Ensure receivers are catching the ball above their eyes, especially in high-pressure situations.
