Greg Holsworth, Head Coach – Henderson State
November 13, 2025
On this week’s episode of Inside the Headset – Presented by CoachComm, we’re joined by Greg Holsworth, the Head Coach at Henderson State University. Coach Holsworth discusses his journey into coaching, the lessons he learned balancing multiple roles early in his career, and how he’s built a foundation of consistency and culture within his program.
From Player to Coach
After his playing career ended, Holsworth knew he wanted to remain a part of the game. His coaching path began at Occidental College, where he learned firsthand the demands of managing multiple responsibilities, including serving as a high school defensive coordinator while coaching at the collegiate level.
Developing a Coaching Identity
Throughout his career, Holsworth worked under a number of successful head coaches, gaining insight into different leadership styles and philosophies. Each experience shaped his own approach, one centered on self-evaluation, discipline, and accountability.
As he notes in the episode, effective leaders must be willing to “have tough conversations with themselves” in order to keep growing and improving.
Building a Winning Culture at Henderson State
Since arriving at Henderson State, Holsworth has placed a strong emphasis on defensive identity, special teams excellence, and cultural consistency. His players understand that success comes from doing the small things right every day.
That mindset has helped the Reddies continue their rise as one of the most competitive programs in the region.
AFCA 35 Under 35 Experience
Holsworth was also selected as part of the 2025 AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute, where he connected with fellow coaches from across all levels of football. He encourages other young coaches to apply, describing the program as an opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.
