July 8, 2025
Kamau Dumas is the Defensive Backs Coach at Monmouth University, beginning his first season in the role in 2025. Before joining Monmouth, Dumas coached at Central Oklahoma, Wagner, Gannon, and Morristown High School. He also played Defensive Back at Monmouth.
Within this video clip, Coach Dumas introduces a Press Man Drill, the Chair Kick Slide, focusing on improving footwork, body position, and balance in blocking or pass protection. This drill helps reinforce key movements for maintaining control and power during engagement. It is often used with a chute and places heavy emphasis on footwork, eyes, and pad level.
Chair Kick Slide:
- Positioning: Split athletes into two groups, facing each other with an invisible chute between them.
- Chair Setup: One athlete holds a chair in front of them, keeping their shoulders down and feet shoulder-width apart.
-
- This helps prevent feet from crossing over.
-
- The chair represents the receiver’s hip.
- Arm Position: Lock arms out with thumbs pointing up. This encourages proper striking and power and keeps the body engaged.
- Footwork: Focus on stepping with the outside foot—either a peer step with the outside foot or a heavy kick slide backward.
- Posture: Emphasize a forward lean with the body, keeping weight over the feet and ensuring the shoulders remain down for balance and control.
- Focus Areas: Eyes, feet, and pad level, which are critical in maintaining form and balance while engaging with the opponent.
