UT Permian Basin Takes Down Angelo State
October 6, 2025
Off to their best start in program history, UT Permian Basin scored on three straight drives to end the first half and never looked back, upsetting then-No. 5 Angelo State on the road, 28-14. It was the Falcons second win over a team ranked in the AFCA top five this season. UTPB is now 5-0 on the season and moves up to No. 6 in this week’s AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, presented by Hudl. Angelo State falls to No. 12. The Falcons don’t have long to savor the victory as they will host No. 13 Central Washington in the only top 25 matchup this coming weekend. Both teams sit atop the Lone Star Conference with 3-0 records.
The top four teams, No. 1 Ferris State, No. 2 Harding, No. 3 West Florida and No. 4 Kutztown, all registered wins, three of them shutouts, and kept their same spots. Western Colorado dominated Fort Lewis, 49-10, and jumps two places to No. 5. California’s (Pa.) upset loss to Seton Hill, 16-7, allowed Augustana (S.D.), Grand Valley State, West Alabama and Minnesota-Duluth to move up multiple places to round out the top 10. With the loss, the Vulcans dropped 10 spots to No. 16.
There was a lot of jockeying around in the top 25, but only one team dropped out. Then-No. 22 Carson-Newman lost to Emory & Henry, 19-13, allowing Ashland and Johnson C. Smith to re-enter the poll in a three-way tie at No. 24 with Slippery Rock. The Rock lost a tough game to Gannon, 38-35, and dropped 10 spots.
