October 1, 2026
On this week’s episode of Inside the Headset – Presented by CoachComm, we’re joined by Jake Wissing, Head Football Coach at UW-River Falls. Named interim head coach in February 2026, Wissing has guided the Falcons to a 3-0 start and a No. 2 ranking.
Wissing took over after completing his 15th season at UW-River Falls and his fifth as defensive coordinator. He helped the Falcons capture back-to-back Isthmus Bowl titles in 2021 and 2022 before winning the WIAC Championship and NCAA Division III National Championship in 2025.
During that championship season, Wissing’s defense led the nation with 40 turnovers gained, including 29 interceptions. The Falcons also led the WIAC in total defense, rushing defense, and scoring defense during conference play. His work helped develop linebacker Gage Timm into a First Team All-American and WIAC Player of the Year.
Before moving to defense, Wissing spent nine seasons as the Falcons’ offensive coordinator and offensive line coach while also serving as assistant head coach. His 2019 offense set program records for total offense, passing offense, and first downs. He was later named the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year following the Falcons’ 9-2 season in 2021.
A 2003 DePauw graduate, Wissing began his coaching career at Alfred University, where he earned his master’s degree. His path also included stops at Norwich, Saint Joseph’s, DePauw, and Sewanee before joining UW-River Falls in 2011.
