Running Back Blocking Progression
April 14, 2026
During the 2026 AFCA Convention, John Carroll College’s Running Backs Coach, Felicia Teeter, covered her specialized blocking progression that is designed to develop the physical and mental toughness of running backs.
Her methodology begins with foundational six-point and four-point ground drills to emphasize explosive hip extension and proper hand placement.
The instruction then transitions to standing drills where players practice closing space violently and managing multiple defenders using arm shields. To address real-game scenarios, Teeter introduces a dynamic lead-blocking drill using a stability ball to simulate a moving ball carrier. This exercise forces blockers to adjust their leverage based on the defender’s angle and the ball’s trajectory.
