A-B-C Steps for Route Running Efficiency
Coach Jzavion McGowan, the Wide Receivers Coach and Pass Game Coordinator at Siena Heights University, shares his detailed approach to developing wide receiver footwork through a progressive system of A, B, and C steps.
Now entering his fourth season with the program in 2025, Coach McGowan brings a versatile coaching background, including time working with the defensive backs at Siena Heights, as well as experience at both Adrian High and Middle Schools in Michigan. His well-rounded perspective shines through in this focused and practical drill progression designed to sharpen every receiver’s route-running fundamentals.
Coach McGowan breaks down the A-B-C progression steps, emphasizing how small, intentional movements create separation and improve explosiveness off the line. These drills are essential for players seeking to refine their technique and for coaches looking for simple, effective footwork progressions.
A-Step (1 Step):
-
Focuses on depth, not width
-
Avoids lateral movement
-
Teaches receivers to roll off the front foot for a powerful launch
B-Step (2 Steps):
-
Modeled after attacking the rim in basketball
-
Encourages urgency and staying on a straight line
C-Step (3 Steps):
-
Builds vertical acceleration and downfield momentum
-
Helps receivers maintain balance through the break
Each step can be practiced from either foot to build symmetry and consistency in execution. These drills translate directly to route running, improving quickness, control, and timing.
