The Foundation of DB Play: The Universal Athletic Position
March 24, 2026
At the 2026 AFCA Convention in Charlotte, NC, Marcus Trice, defensive backs coach at the University of Houston, detailed his philosophy on player development centered on the Universal Athletic Position (UAP). Trice argues that while specific philosophies on press coverage or tackling may vary, elite performance always begins with a consistent, powerful stance that translates across all sports.
Defining the UAP
The UAP is described as the “power position” essential for every level of football. Trice defines this stance through a specific 45-45-45 geometry:
- Ankles: 45-degree angle.
- Knees: 45-degree angle.
- Hips: 45-degree angle.
- Back: Perfectly flat, as if a pole were running from the head through the backside.
Drills for DB Mastery
Trice utilizes a tiered progression to move players from a static stance into explosive, controlled movement.
- Box Footwork & The Re-Step: Focused on the “first two steps,” players practice a 4-inch “re-step” to maintain balance and power transition.
- Visual Cues & Hip Focus: Players are taught to “burn a hole” into the opponent’s hip logo. This ensures they react to the athlete’s center of mass rather than head fakes.
- The “Body Clock” for Blow Delivery: When engaging blockers, Trice uses a numbering system (1 for the middle, 2 for the logo, 3 for the outside shoulder) to teach hand placement and “triple extension” of the knees, hips, and ankles.
- Press Progressions: Trice emphasizes “pure steps” and “kick slides” at 45-degree angles to maintain depth, preventing receivers from easily pulling past the defender.
“It’s really nothing new; it’s just new ways to teach, new ways to learn, and new ways to grow.”
